The contrast between The Handmaid’s Tale and Brave new world

Writing books has evolved with time as a result of the adoption of new writing styles and genres. Authors have invented novels, which are narratives that are lengthy and complex. The novels have incorporated dystopia, a genre that entails imaginative human experience that is dehumanizing, frightening, and undesirable. This paper analyzes the contrast between themes in two dystopian novels, The Hands maid tale, and Brave new world.

The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel by Margaret Atwood, a Canadian author, and published in 1985 to highlight how women lost their rights. The tale is narrated by a woman named Offred, who describes her past and current life. Offred lived a restricted life in the Handmaids training camp and later was responsible for bearing children for the commander and his wife, who were infertile. The commander’s wife plans for Offered to sleep with Nick, who tries to help Offred escape. In the Handmaid tale, the central theme is gender roles evident in Gilead, where Offred loses her job when all women are fired. Theocracy and religion in the novel are used as justification for the savage characteristics in Gilead. The Rachel and Leah center is a religious center, but fertile servants carry adulterous relationships.

Atwood explains fertility, which is a reason for Offred and other handmaids’ captivity. Gilead has many issues that lead to infertility issues; hence, servants are forced to bear children for their commanders. The book has a theme of rebellion with residents in the area disobey laws meant to govern Gilead. Moira rebels against the law and escapes the handmaid’s center, but her escape is not futile as she lands in Jezebel. Offered is oppressed by society but finds love through Nick, who offers to help her escape, contributing to the theme of freedom. Atwood also uses storytelling together with memory to tell Offred’s story of her past and present life.

Brave New World

The Brave new world is also a dystopian novel by an American author Aldous Huxley and was published in 1932. The novel highlights a futuristic society that is termed as the World state, mainly revolves around science, technology, and efficiency, which are the central theme in the book. Huxley examines how the government limits happiness through the mass production of babies in test tubes inside the central London Hatchery and conditioning centers. The babies are later conditioned and grown according to a particular social class. Lenina Crowne, who is a worker at the center, is criticized for having a relationship with one man but later dates Bernard Marx, who travels with her.

Lenina brings back Linda and her son John who don’t fit in the society having lived in the reservation for years. Themes in the Brave new world are different from the handmaid’s tale as the novel illustrates future totalitarianism. The liberty of individuals has been taken over by the power state, which mainly controls the people. The author raises the issue of technology alongside control. In London, children are produced inside test tubes and grown in a particular manner, thus conditioning babies into their preference. The cost of happiness is examined in the book where the citizens get exactly what they want by promoting promiscuous sex, precise jobs, and the use of drugs to get rid of sadness. From the highlighted themes in both books, there is dehumanization, which is surrounded by different factors in the books, respectively.
