Properties of water

Prior to the discovery of DNA, the scientists who were working to determine which molecule was responsible for the transmission of characteristics from one generation to the next knew that the molecule must meet the following criteria: 1) be able to copy itself precisely, 2) be stable but also be able to be modified, and 3) be complex enough to determine an organism’s phenotype.
a. Explain how DNA meets each of the three criteria stated above.
b. Select one of the criteria stated above and describe experimental evidence used to determine that DNA is the hereditary material.
2.Water is essential to all living things. Explain each of the following in terms of the properties of water.
a. the role of water as a medium for the metabolic processes of cells
b. the ability of water to moderate temperature within living organisms and in organisms’ environments
c. the movement of water from the roots to the leaves of plants
3. Copy of Cell division occurs by mitosis or meiosis to produce daughter cells. These processes ensure that daughter cells inherit the appropriate number of chromosomes. Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis providing supporting examples: (12 pts).
a. three examples of how these cell division processes are similar, and
b. three examples of how these cell division process differ.
