Did you limit the four topics based on the readings?
a. show how electronic communication impedes safe driving
b. show how Americans are obsessed with appearances
(for instance, focus on teens–choose one type of eating disorder, plastic surgery, or body art)
c. show how surveillance improves the workplace
d. show how walking can influence thinking and writing
Did you choose only one of those topics to start taking notes from the sources?
Take five notes from five of your six sources for the one topic (you are leaving out one of the sources).
For your notes, you need three direct quotes (one should be considered a long quote—see below), one paraphrase, and one summary note (all notes should be taken from sources published within the last five years)
For each note:
1. The source is introduced by a signal phrase that names its author and identifies the 2.

At the end of the paper, a list of works cited (arranged alphabetically by authors’ last

For the long quote:
. Quotation marks are unnecessary because the indented format tells readers that the passage is taken word-for-word from the source. At the end of an indented
quotation, the parenthetical citation goes outside the final mark of punctuation. In addition to introducing it with a signal phrase, follow the quote with interpretive comments that link the quotation to your paper’s argument.
Example of a long quotation with effective context
Technology makes it possible for employers to gather enormous amounts of data about employees, often far beyond what is necessary to satisfy safety or productivity concerns. And the trends that drive technology—faster, smaller, cheaper—make it possible for larger and larger numbers of employers to gather ever-greater amounts of personal data. (3–4)
In an age when employers can collect data whenever employees use their computers—when they send e-mail, surf the Web, or even arrive at or depart from their workstations—the challenge for both employers and employees is to determine how much is too much.
