Using a few blank copies of the performance matrix, consider two or three individuals you are working with at the current time. If you were to plot them on the grid, where would they be? Mark them with an X and then consider what possible action steps you could take to manage their performance moving forward. Start thinking about strategies you might be able to use to support effective performance. Don’t forget the individuals performing in the upper-right quadrant: there is a danger of overlooking them and focusing on bringing up your underperformers. The individuals in this quadrant need to be sure they are on your radar and that they are being recognized and rewarded for delivering the performance you require. They will also need to be stretched and challenged to maintain levels of motivation and avoid drifting into complacency.
