I am a Mexican-American, first-generation university student who is a child of immigrants. The problematic encounter that is to be written about is the instance in which I was at work and a coworker mentioned that she was not getting along with me to another coworker but did not want to break the peace. The second coworker ended up telling me this information and I found it to be an underhanded remark that she should have talked to me about. This coworker happened to be Asian-American and she had mentioned that her parents raised her to not create tension or unnecessary confrontations in professional settings whereas I had been accustomed to discussing my issues directly even if that meant having unwanted confrontations. This difference in cultures led to a misunderstanding and escalated a situation unnecessarily.
