As stated in the book, pharmaceutical corporations are often characterized as “drug pushers” because they spend millions of dollars advertising the use of drugs and encourage their sales representatives to use various incentives to persuade physicians to prescribe new drugs and other pharmaceutical products.  Watch the below video (approximately 17 mins).

According to the website https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ (Links to an external site.) pharmaceutical companies paid physicians and teaching hospitals approximately $9.35 billion in 2018.  Visit the website and search for a particular physician or teaching hospital who received payments from pharmaceutical companies or a pharma company who made payments (you can use the advanced search option to search by area or specialty if you do not have a specific name).

Once you identify a physician, teaching hospital, or pharma company, discuss the following:

  • If you picked a physician, identify the following information for 2018:
    • the total general payments, research payments, ownership and investment interest, associated research funding received and the number of transactions for each of these categories (can be found in the summary tab).
    • the top 3 companies who made payments, the number of payments they made,  and the amount they paid (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a line graph format – hoover over the line for payment details).
    • the nature (category) of the payment, the amount for that type of payment, and the percentage of that type (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a pie graph and table format).
  • If you picked a teaching hospital, identify the following information for 2018:
    • the total general payments and research payments received and the number of transactions for each of these categories (can be found in the summary tab).
    • the top 3 companies who made payments, the number of payments they made,  and the amount they paid (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a line graph format – hoover over the line for payment details).
    • the nature (category) of the payment, the amount for that type of payment, and the percentage of that type (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a pie graph and table format).
  • A pharmaceutical company, identify the following information for 2018:
    • the total general payments, research payments, and  ownership and investment interest paid and the number of transactions for each of these categories (can be found in the summary tab).
    • the top 3 physicians and the top 3 teaching hospitals (if research payments were made) receiving payments, the number of payments they received,  and the amount they received (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a line graph format – hoover over the line for payment details).
    • the nature (category) of the payment, the amount for that type of payment, and the percentage of that type (can be found under each payment type tab and is listed in a pie graph and table format).

In addition, answer the following questions:

  • What are your thoughts/feelings related to the information found on the webpage and in the video.
  • In your opinion, are you worried about the power that that the big pharma companies have in the US?  Why or why not?
  • What can be done to ensure that consumers are safe and doctors are not bought by these big pharma companies?
  • What were 2 things that you learned that you did not know before watching the video?
  • As a consumer, how will this information benefit you?

  • What are 2 things that you learned about this case that you did not previously know?
  • In your opinion, should Ford have been held criminally responsible for the deaths/injuries?  If so, who should have been held responsible within the corporation and how should have the responsible parties and company been punished?
  • How could have the injuries and deaths associated with this case been prevented?
  • Do you believe that companies still use this type of risk/benefit analysis today?
