Consider your student ID composed of seven digits. Ignore all zeros and convert the

remaining value to binary format. For example, 1045560 is simplified to 14556 and

then converted to: dataword = 11100011011100.

Question 1 (1.5 marks): CRC

a) Find the codeword corresponding to the dataword you just generated using the

CRC error detection technique, and the divisor polynomial g(x) = x5 + x3 + x+1.

b) Assume there is no error and the receiver received the codeword you generated

in question a). Show what the receiver will do to detect that there is no error. Do

it with binary division modulo 2.

c) Assume that an error corrupted three bits at 0 of your choice; show how the CRC

technique allows the receiver to detect such an error. Do it with polynomial

division.

Question 2 (2 marks): Hamming code

a) Find the codeword corresponding to the dataword you just generated using the

hamming code error correction technique.

b) Assume that an error corrupted a single bit at 0 of your choice; show how the

hamming code technique allows the receiver to correct such an error.

Question 3 (1.5 marks): Convolutional Codes

a) Find the codeword corresponding to the dataword you just generated using the

convolutional encoder (2,1,3) shown in Slide 8-22.

b) Assume there is no error and the receiver received the codeword you generated

in question a). Show what the receiver will do to extract the original dataword.

Use the trellis diagram to illustrate how the encoding process works.

c) Assume that an error corrupted three bits at 0 of your choice; show how the

Viterbi code allows the receiver to correct such an error.
