Structural anatomy of the species Assignment | Professional Writing Services

Anatomy in Comparison

For this extra credit assignment, you will compose short research paper to identify and compare an anatomical region or structure of humans with in other species of vertebrate animals. Given the broad scope, I have outlined specific topicsas listed below for you to choose from. This assignment should be comparable to the length and depth of your Case Study assignments, and similarly, you must provide proper citation of sources. As this is extra credit, you get one attempt at submitting this assignment. Due date is 5/11/2020 at the end of the day.

The idea behind this assignment is gain a deeper understanding of how our body works by comparing it with other species. Some animals are closely related to us, and therefore part of their bodies may work similarly as our own. Others may be distantly related to us, and use the same body structures in different ways (or different body structures in similar ways). By looking outside of the box that is human anatomy, we can better understand how biological tissues and structures are used across living things and perhaps, one day use this knowledge to benefit human medicine or life in general.

You must choose one of the following topics:

  • Anatomical differences between modern humans and Neanderthal people, a group of extinct humans that lived in Europe and Asia during the last ice age. How did their anatomical features help them survive their environment and lifestyle?
  • Why and how do some animals (e.g., cows, deer) ruminate (chew cuds), and how this behavior benefit their survival.
  • Compare the upper limb of a human, a horse, and a bat. How are the same bones and muscles modified in different ways to allow different functions? What kind of motions are allowed in each type of upper limbs?
  • What does Tyrannosaurus rex eat, and why does it have such tiny arms? What kind of adaptation does it have for eating the things that it did, and how do we know all of this when all we have were their fossilized bones?
  • Fish breathe through gills and only have two-chambered hearts. How does this work? Do they have homologous structures to our lungs? Do we have homologous structures to their gills?

For this assignment, you must answer AT LEAST the following points:

  • Describe the relevant region/structural anatomy of the species in question
  • Compare with the human anatomy of the same region/structure as you have learned in this class.
  • What kind of things does the anatomy of these other species allow them to do, which humans cannot do (or cannot do well)? Have we invented anything (machines, etc.) that allows us to compensate and do similar things?
  • If your species are still alive today, explain how their anatomy benefitted their survival. If your species is extinct, discuss how their anatomy may be related to their disappearance.

Scoring:  The scoring of this assignment will be based on the originality of your writing (proper citations) and the accuracy of your descriptions.  The full length of your assignment should be between 1-1.5 pages (double spaced) in length not including references.

10 point of extra credit will be possible, students can choose to complete both of the posted EC options for a possible total of 20 combine points.
